Please give us a bit of background on yourself.

My name is Kathryn Garcia. I am the Founder of Sydney Events Things To Do. I am also an event organiser and a promoter. I have completed a Bachelor of Arts Communications degree with a major in Media from the University of Western Sydney 2005. I am passionate about organising events and working with brands. I’ve been working in the events industry since 2003. I have evolved from working on the front line as customer service to handling the management side of events. I have оvеr ten уеаrѕ оf еxреrіеnсе іn product рrоmоtіоnѕ аnd еvеntѕ. I ended up working in the events industry due to not finding a job in the media industry when I graduated from university. Since I only had experience in events whilst at university I continued working in this industry.

The website - Sydney Events Things To Do is an extension of my Facebook group called Sydney Events Things To Do. I have 2k members in the Facebook group. I started the group in February 2018. The group grows organically, and event organisers post their events here. I wanted to provide another platform for event organisers who are not members of the group to advertise their events on the website. So, I launched the website in November 2020.

What are some of your biggest achievements throughout your journey?

Launching and pivoting my business during COVID-19. I never thought when I was first started working in the event industry in 2003 that I would become an event organiser and have my own business.

What are 3 business principles that are of core value to you?

1. Exceed customer expectations. Going above and beyond to provide exceptional service to my customers.

2. Be a leader. Paving the way to be the best business within the event industry.

3. Pursue excellence. Always striving to succeed no matter what obstacles are presented.

What is the hardest part of being an entrepreneur?

Finding ways to increase brand awareness and customer reach. Also, wearing many hats in the business as I am a start-up, and I don’t have any employees.

How do you stand out in this digital world?

By implementing social media strategies to promote my business. Having an established and growing Facebook group community of 2k members.

What was one of the biggest mistakes that you have made?

Choosing the wrong website platforms.

Throughout your journey and what lesson did you learn from it?

Even though I chose the wrong website platforms, each step lead me closer to the correct website. I was able to evaluate what features I wanted, how it was being executed and that was from the process of trial and error.

What is your key to success?

The tenacity to not give up when things are not working out. This motivates me to keep going when times are tough. Everything is working out and unfolding the way it is supposed to be. Without any hurdles in your business, you are not learning in your entrepreneurial journey.

What does success mean to you?

Success is something that you have achieved despite the setbacks in life. Failing many times and getting back up after each setback makes you stronger as an individual, but also makes you humble to appreciate the things in your business and your life. More importantly proving to people who didn’t believe in you that you were going to be successful through your determination to exceed people’s expectations. Also, being open to creative possibilities enables you to find solutions you would have not thought of before which in turn helps with your success in your business.
